Regulations

A.    Objectives and Generals

The ¡°Palatino¡± Awards ¨C The Second Music Composition (violin works) Competition aim to:

Promote the creation of Chinese violin music thru a fair and open composition competition; prosper violin music and teaching material to promote the development of violin performance in China.

The final decision for the Award-winning compositions will be made through two rounds of selections and a competition of the final live concert between May and June of 2008 in Beijing and Tianjin respectively.  Selection of the preliminary and the semi-final rounds will be based on the submitted scores and CD music. 

The Panel of Jury will be a group of world-recognized outstanding composers.  The decision of this competition made by the Panel will be final and unchangeable.

C.    Prizes and Awards

First Prize: RMB 30,000

2 Second Prize: RMB 20,000 each

5 Third Prize: RMB 8,000 each

10 Honorable Mentions: RMB 2,000 each

Each of the finalists who are not the winners will receive a certificate

First Prize of Violin Performance: RMB 3,000

2 Second Prize of Violin Performance: RMB 2,000 each

3 Third Prize of Violin Performance: RMB 1,000 each

 

D.    Registration Requirements and Procedure

a)    The submitted composition shall be able to present the Chinese traditional style; promote musical creativity and violin arts of pure authenticity, pure goodness, and pure beauty.

b)    The entry shall be composed for solo, duet, or accompanied on the piano.  The duration of the entry shall not exceed 10 minutes.

c)    The submitted composition shall not be awarded in any form, no matter as a whole, or partially, or in any other versions.

d)    One composer can submit maximum two compositions.  If the entry contains several chapters, then the composer is only allowed to submit one composition, which shall not exceed 15 minutes.

e)    All scores shall be printed on A4 size staff papers.  The participant of the competition is required to submit 10 copies of his/her score as entry.  The scores shall be submitted anonymously.

f)     The submitted composition shall be recorded on a CD in a format that is playable by a CD player.

h)    All submitted materials are non-returnable and shall be documented.

 

E.    Procedure of Selection

a)    Registration form and all required materials must be submitted with the scores to the Organizer by April 30, 2008 (based on the local postmark).

b)    The preliminary and the semi-final rounds will start on May 5, 2008 and May 8, 2008 respectively.  Thirty finalists will be selected through the two rounds mentioned above.  The list of finalists will be announced in Sina.com and Music Weekly Report on May 12, 2008.

c)    All of the thirty finalists will be noticed by the Committee starting on May 15, 2008.

d)    All of the thirty finalists will be invited to attend the Final Live Concert & Award Presentation Ceremony in Beijing.

e)    Final Live Concert: June 13 to June 15, 2008 in Beijing. 

 

F.    Grant and Exercise of Rights

a)    The Award winner holds the copyright of the winning work.

b)    The Award-winning composer agrees to grant the rights to the Organizer, without requiring further payment or royalties.  These rights include the   following:

                 i.  The Organizer ahs the right to produce the music, sound and video recording, or in any other necessary forms, of the Award-winning                     compositions, for non-profitable use.

                 ii. The Organizer has the right to give the world premiere of the winning compositions and the right to give performances of the winning compositions, regardless when and where, for the first two years.

c)    The following text and the Chinese characters shall be shown on the title page of the Award-winning compositions, and in all of the concert programs, no matter where and when these winning compositions are performed.

d)    To submit his/her composition to the 2008 ¡°Palatino¡± Awards ¨C The Second Music Composition (violin works) Competition is to be considered as the result that the participant has read the Regulations with full understanding and has agreed to all the items in the Regulations.

e)    In the event of any discrepancy, the Chinese version of the Regulations is the only legal, valid and authorized one.

f)     The Organizer reserves the right to amend, if necessary, the rules and conditions of the competition at its discretion and without any prior notice.  The right of interpretation of the Regulations belongs to the Organizer.
